Books
Recommended by Amanda @ A Bookshelf Monstrosity:
- The Big Money by John Dos Passos: This book, the last of the U.S.A. trilogy, deals with the materialism and disjointedness of the 1920s. It also shows people’s recklessness with money and how that helped to lead to the market crash of 1929. The text is more fragmented than The Great Gatsby and the style is quite different, but it offers another insightful picture of the same concerns and period.
- In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway: Hemingway published this book in 1925, the same year he became friends with Fitzgerald and a year before The Great Gatsby came out. It is a loosely connected group of short stories that reveals Hemingway’s prose at its freshest. Even those who do not like Hemingway may find it worth reading a story or two because they shed some light on the literary movement towards sharper prose of which he and Fitzgerald were a part.
- Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern by Joshua Zeitz
- The Maisie Dobbs Series by Jacqueline Winspear
Recommended by Jen @ YA Romantics:
- Bright Young Things Series by Anna Godberson
- Vixen Series by Jillian Larkin
Recommended by Karen @ Teen Librarian’s Toolbox:
- The Luxe Series by Anna Godberson
- The Gossip Girl Series by Cecily von Ziegesar
